I have well and truly been in a trough this summer - at one point I was even enjoying not having to worry about the blues, the constant worry and anxiety had taken a welcome holiday from my life. I started to really concern myself when I was thinking that life without Everton was much easier and much less of a chore.
The trough lasted about a day before the worry crept back in (It is a typical Evertonian trait when we consider the lack of worry a 'trough').
Why weren't we signing anyone at all? Why hasn't the ground move been sorted? Why has Moyes not signed on again? How are we going to field a team against Blackburn with 12 players in our squad? Why hasn't my season ticket arrived yet? Why is Robbie Keane joining the Spanish B team? Why haven't we welcomed Fernandes for a third and final time?
Whilst many of the concerns are interweaved - specificaly the ground move and money for transfers, despite the official line - I was now praying for at least a bit of blue sky both metaphorically and meteorically.
As the rumours start to build and the names become ever more unrealistic (although the Owen rumour may have legs, preferably ones without dodgy hamstrings) there is one player who has impressed me more and more over the last few weeks. The young midfielder causes a massive divide in opinion amongst the fans, so I can only imagine the indecision is magnified ten fold in the mind of our outstanding manager.
Manuel Fernandes is the type of player Everton need, even at around £8 million.
What seems like a ridiculous statement given his relative inconsistency is one which I will back to the hilt and one which I hope Mr Moyes agrees with.
Admittedly he struggled for form and ability to keep hold of the ball when he returned from Spain, yet one argument you could never level at him is that he shunned his responsibilities. The knack to find a yard of space and demand possession is a quality all top midfielders have, and is something we see in Manny at a higher level than anyone since Dacourt delighted the Street End.
