It's obvious that from the mid point of last season to the end we really struggled with injury problems, and to be honest, performed exceptionally given the circumstances. To finish fifth, when prospects of that at the beginning of the season (with a fully fit squad) seemed bleak, and to reach the final of the FA Cup for the first time in over a decade, was a momentus achievement.
Even though the squad will no doubt be stronger when the key players arrive back in full training (Yak, Arteta & Jags), we will definately struggle to equal what we have achieved this season, let alone better it without bolstering the squad with high profile signings. Acquisitions of a quality right back and striker would make the team a serious contender for fourth spot and if Glen Johnson doesn't move to City or Liverpool, why not try to get him on Everton's books? Obviously this man's been all over the press recently and it seems unlikely he'll be within our price range anyway, but how about one world class striker who has seemingly been overlooked by everybody...Eidur Gudjohnsen.
The Icelandic forward has proved himself prolific in the Premier League, but although he may be on a great wage and be a Champions' League winner, he isn't getting much playing time at all at FC Barcelona. He'd surely welcome a move back to the Premier League, and unlikely to be the right fit for the top four, why not go to number five?
