Phil Neville offers no excuses as EFC suffer Carling Cup humiliation at Brentford
PHIL NEVILLE today insisted Everton have run out of excuses for their abysmal start to the season, as they were knocked out of the Carling Cup by League One side Brentford.
HISTORY suggests that Brentford can be a difficult place to vanquish - even for supposedly superior would-be conquerors.

These things happen is not acceptable- Not anymore!
I awoke at 2.30am this morning and all I could think was 'those poor Evertonians that traveled to Brentford- they won't even be home yet.'
Whilst I, along with thousands of other Evertonians, realise that the current situation we are in is not down to one obvious finger pointing factor but several issues, I do believe that one or two changes could make a big difference.
I remain convinced that when Moyes has a full squad to select from (with the exception of Rodwell, who got injured playing in a position that he has never played in before at Villa) he still does not know his best XI. The striker situation highlights this more than any- 7 games gone and 4 different lone strikers so far- Beckford, Saha, Yakubu and Cahill.
The problem in the last 2 games to me is clear- 1 striker is fine as long as Tim Cahill is in the side, without him we are clearly lacking not only in goals but also in chances. Through no fault of his own Fellani cannot play this roll and I find it infuriating that such an influential player is wasted in this way.
Another victim of Moyes' pack shuffling is Jonny Heitinga. This is a player that played in the World Cup Final for his country at Centre-Half, a position that he performed superbly for the Blues in the second half of last season. Alongside Jagielka they looked like a pairing for many years to come, so what did we do at the start of the season? Keep him out of the team on the opening day and then play him wandering around in the middle of the pitch for the last few games, a position that he looks nowhere near as composed. Jonny is a good communicator on the pitch, a constant talker, which is one of the abilities I see lacking in Distin.
Distin is a decent player and nobody could doubt he puts his heart into every performance; his egging the Gwladys Street crowd to build up the noise against Newcastle highlighted this.......... BUT..... I think that leaving him out of the team will get the best out of players who are currently struggling out of position.
Do I think Moyes will do this, even though it must have crossed his mind- particularly after the Man Utd game? No, I donâÂÂt!
I believe that at times Moyes' player support to certain players is beyond just putting his arm around them and giving them a 'heads-up'. Take our right hand side against Newcastle for instance- Hibbert and Osman. Both players have been great servants to the club and remain decent squad players but starting more or less every game this season is a farce.
The shape and balance of the team can only be improved by going back to basics. Lets be ruthless for the good of the team and leave Distin out for the Fulham game. Drop Jonny back to Centre-half with Jags and bring Felli back to the 'holding role' just in front of the back four. This should appease a lot of fans and make playing with a lone striker more tolerable.
Moyes' only real dilemma then is- which striker does he prefer? I believe that we would benefit more by picking one and giving him a decent run in the team instead of chopping and changing every week. He also needs to address the Osman position. I would prefer to see an off-form 'Billy than an off-form Osman, mainly because he delivers a better ball and seems to have a knack of scoring important goals, something that Osman doesn't look like doing at all at the moment.
Roll on January and the FA Cup- It appears that thatâÂÂs all we have left to hope for this season.
Oh dear,
Without a doubt we are going back to the mid seventies scenario, were the best we could hope for in a season was to beat that lot accross the park, and finish better than 14th.
We are lacking a striker with the intelligence to play as a striker, at the premier league standard.
This uncentainty in front of goal is like a flu empidemic throught out the team, so everyone becomes unceratin. The buck stops with MOYES, get it sorted by christmas or get out.
Remember billy bingham,,those days are back again folks! mark my words...
