The return of Alan Irvine, a chance for Billy to start moving...

By Mark Reid on Jan 3, 10 03:00 PM in Fans

The FA Cup was a welcome change to the league campaign that allows us to reminisce about Wembley - twice - in 2009 and the aim to go one better this time out.
With our injury concerns, its been a tough time for bluenoses everywhere the past several months. The spine of the team out, the club's been tested beyond all limits. We seem to be on the way back though, the return of Phil Neville was beyond words against Burnley. Composure. Confidence. Determination. A win was inevitable as we tried to turn the screw.

Then we welcomed Carlisle FC to the grand old lady - Goodison Park. As you expect the usual cries as the Cumbrians enjoyed their day out, rang out in the cup allocation in Bullens Road. Fair play to Everton, for reducing ticket prices for the game at what is a tight time of year for everyone.
A welcome win thanks again to the lad Seamus Coleman, who proved he's no flash in the pan. Exuding the qualities we want he got forward and was determined to get into the box. From the resulting play Cahill got the tap in and from there it was game over for Carlisle. Seamus Coleman shows what's possible if you have a good manager who can through his scouting network, locate and sign talent at excellent value. We have to thank Sligo Rovers for such an exciting prospect coming to us.

Now some immediate observations of why Everton weren't performing as we know they can....
Diniyar Bilyaletdinov.jpg

We can't be certain if Tony Hibbert was struggling with the groin strain before the game. However, time and again it appeared that the two right side players (Hibbert and Billy) were completely isolated from the rest of the game. To be fair Hibbert did make some runs to try get forward, but mainly when Pienaar had come over. Everything we tried to do was down the left or through the middle. Everton were only using 2/3 of the pitch. Crowded into a smaller area and playing right into Carlisle's game plan.
Two separate occasions looked over to see Billy and Hibbert just watching the game.

Why was this?
Billy's poor movement and attitude. Any time the ball came over his poor final ball and rather lackadaisical play against motivated-Carlisle player's playing at a level they dream of. Lose balls and lack of purposefulness. With Hibbert, who we know is offensively limited this meant our entire right side was being carried by the remaining 8 outfield players.

Throughout this season, I've been puzzled by the fact when we have a throw in no one comes and offers themselves. This attitude is something Billy was displaying in the Carlisle game during open play.

Billy is a full international. A multi-million pound player. But his movement in the English games been atrocious. Where its all about movement movement movement. His lack of it is putting him under more pressure.

With the imminent return of Alan Irvine, the well respected assistant coach maybe Billy can get some one on one coaching in movement. Alan Irvine was a winger in his playing days and knows all about English football.

If I were coaching Billy, he'd be doing coaching drills entirely focusing on his movement (pass move pass move pass move) for the next month. He needs showing that he needs to be constantly moving, taking up new positions and making himself available.

Sometimes one touch is all thats needed - then relocate.

If he needs video examples - show him Jimmy Bullard. Its a strange example, but he's one we all know who's doing this. Making himself available constantly throughout a game and who's constantly moving.

Billy never moves. And isn't making himself available. That's why there are murmurings amongst the Everton crowd. Gus Hiddink wouldn't rate him so highly and play him internationally if he weren't a top quality player. But as Everton legend Graeme Sharp has said on local radio multiple times - Everton are carrying him. He needs to learn quickly.

If I were Alan Irvine and marching back into Finch Farm at the request of Moyes, Diniyar Bilyaletdinov would be the player I would focus on getting playing. Therefore allowing Steve Round to continue with the other playing staff...

Maybe the return of Alan Irvine is a blessing no one expected when Preston terminated his employment. Preston's loss is Everton and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov's gain.

Bily has alredy played a full season in Russia. This is his first season in the Prem. Give the lad a chance ffs!!!

Mark Reid said:

I'm giving him a chance. Listen if I'm saying this he needs to do it.

This isn't Russia the English league will eat him alive if he doesn't up his workrate, and by that he needs to be constantly moving or looking to move.

I'm no blanket-criticiser. This is for his own good. Its called "COACHING". i.e. You COACH to improve performance.

And as for the staff at Everton they know their stuff it'll be the same from them.

131 years of history of which Moyes and Irvine have a decade each in management and coaching!

If I see it. You can be certain they do too. If a player like Seamus Coleman can come on do this and demolish the opposition - TWICE. You know I'm right.

Am I missing something or has it been agreed that Irvine has returned. My impression was that Moyes said he would be welcome any time but that seem to imply if he Irvine wanted to to do that. Your article seems to suggest he has already started coaching the first team again - what is Steve Round's role going to be?

Jro said:

Imminent return of Irvine? All I'm aware of is a comment by Moyes that he was welcome back in some capacity. Nothing more. You're getting a bit ahead of yourself.

Mark Reid - smash your keyboard up and stick your mouse up your @nus. That is the BIGGEST load of b()llocks I've EVER read.

Oh and indiscriminate use of captials makes you look like a c_unt.

You know I'm right.

No player in Europe has played 18 months solid, give the lad a break.
You was probably one of the fella's on Felliani's back last season and look at him now, bell- you not him !

David O'Keefe said:

Thank you Mark, that was hilarious, a tedious fanzine writer offering to coach an international class footballer. Priceless.

Mark Reid said:

As opposed to your joke of a website David O'Keeffe?

Fair play. Whilst Jennings, yourself and company are torn to shreds with their ridiculous articles and statements ... I don't feel much concern with any of your opinions.

And as for any other commentors. No I was not on Fellaini's back. And yes I use the occasional CAPS for emphasis. Manily because some are too braindead not read correctly otherwise

David O'Keefe said:

Your "not concerned with our opinions" very true that.

Nice to know that you hold your readers in such high regard. If I called a fellow blue braindead on an everton site I would expect some harsh words from the editor/admin of the site. I expect trinity mirror to do the same.

I don't think your fit to be a fans voices on Everton Banter; and I look forward to the day when Trinity Mirror reach the same conclusion.

Mark Reid said:

David O'Keeffe. I'm not concerned with YOUR opinion.

You can expect all you want. I've seen far far worse on your joke of a website. For one it's got a overt bias, and inspection of your forums prove what a joke it is.

I don't claim to be the fans voice.

So please take your sactimonious irrelevant error strewn drawl back there.

David O'Keefe said:

"far far worse on your joke of a website"

Two things: I am not a member of the said sites editorial team and secondly the far far worse came from you and you alone, no-one else.

Also-O'Keefe has one F not two.

Its good to know that you hold the opinions of your fellow blues in such high regard, Mark, your a fans representative on this site and you have a duty whether you like it or not to enage with them and to do so in a civil manner. Thus far you have been unable to do so.

Mark Reid said:

When you cease refering to Everton as "pussys" and the continual publication of bile directed at EFC, David Moyes and so forth on your website you might find some civil discourse. But you won't as your half dozen forum members prove.

Being a teenager you obviously have much growing up to do.

And for your information having read some of your "star man" Joe's previous attempts at articles the following reader comments from others in response to them should be taken onboard.

"What a ridiculous article"...

"Joe, Your tedious articles just get worse and you seem to just write for the sake of writing ignoring whether there is a valid point or not."

David. Seems like Joe taught you all he knows.

I'm more concerned with Everton football club. Not someone like you or your ridiculous website. You talk about "civil engagement". Thats rich considering the undeserved abuse directed at the Everton manager from you young whippersnappers, who've only seen two Everton managers. Some of us have seen far more. And equally. You might think it clever writing about things, but as the commentor says unless you have a point. Then don't bother!

David O'Keefe said:

Using that logic, Mark, I can say that your not a very good writer as you have recieved some criticism in this thread.

Nice to know that you see your role as a fans voice at Everton Banter is to defend the clubs management at all costs. I and I expect many others would like to see the fans voice (chosen by Trinity Mirror) to use his critical faculties.

Sadly they are lacking, all you have done in this thread is abuse your critics (fellow blues) for disagreeing with you. Nice of you to bring my age into this thread considering that it is irrelevant. What matters is your article which is extremely poor and has been given the treatment that it deserves.

For the record Mark has an issue with SoS1878 (a relatively small, but rapidly growing fansite) and its editorial team for reasons that are had to fathom; until you read the Yes man rubbish that he spouts.

Mark Reid said:

I take the rough with the smooth, safe in the knowledge for every sos1878 there is another site and thousands of fans with a fair degree of understanding of the difficulties with which the team and manager are faced. Those not wishing to jump on someone through complete inexperience and ignorance.

Supporting managerial/coaching decisions doesn't make you a yes man. This seems to be one crucial thing you lot seem to not of grasped. No one's infaliable. But all too often Joe, David and co. seem to think they're excellent writers just for making a criticism.

When you boys have actually been in a position to actually manage real people - then come back with what you feel are these justified statements.

Until then continue your fledgling university careers. You've alot to learn. Maybe when you've finished you might begin to grasp just whats involved with managing a premier league football club. Over the past few months there isn't an area of management or the club you haven't criticised!

The fact you've found the need to come onto EvertonBanter and my specific article as an antagonist proves that the SOS1878's motley crew doesn't quite match the self-assured vitrole they've issued over the past few months.

If you think its a poor article fine. It's my own effort. Based on some actual research.

But one thing I don't do is write for the sake of writing. Unlike one observer of your website's principal writer:

"Joe, Your tedious articles just get worse and you seem to just write for the sake of writing ignoring whether there is a valid point or not."

That indicates others have latched onto your meaningless criticism of the manager. The manager with a difficult enough job as it is without teenagers calling him a "schoolboy", whilst he's trying to get a team crippled by injuries into a gelled unit, and with the stability that needs for it to happen.

David O'Keefe said:

Mark, how many times do I have to tell you that I'm not part of the SoS1878 editorial team?

I don't think Mark you can take the rough with the smooth, you have responded to my initial criticisms with ad-hominem attacks and nothing else.

Your entire article was premissed on the topic of Billy's lack of movement and that he should move more that's your analysis of the weaknesses on our right side. Wrong he doesn't need to move he needs an attacking full-back to help him out. So thats diagnosis wrong and then you proceed to give a coaching prescription that is laughable. We need a right-sided Leighton Baines not a leaden footed Tony Hibbert on his side of the pitch. Stephen Piennar's game also suffers when he switches to Tony's side, but you don't notice that.

Also, Mark you have brought up management experience as if that is relevant to anything. What is relevant is your article which is hopelessly wrong and your attitude towards your fellow blues, disagree with their opinions by all means, but don't get personal with them.
To conclude, Mark, I will be moving into management this year, but if your a manager then may I take this opportunity to offer my sympathies to your long-suffering underlings.

Mark Reid said:

Yet again more claims that the idea to force Bilyaletdinov to adapt through a change in coaching methods is hopeless? And that the fact him not moving isn't making him easier to mark out of a game? And the old "blame Hibbert" one. Despite the fact the long term replacement of Hibbert's already probably been found.

You continue with your teenage self rightousness. Reality is you haven't experienced enough football yet to be so sure of youself.

Plus the fact is David you won't be managing anyone else for at least a year more likely two with the zero experience you have in any field you fall into. So thats a woeful bit of analysis yourself there.

You and your motley crew are nothing more than a bunch of teenage inexperience clowns quick to criticise and call the manager a "schoolboy", but you're pretty much more than school boys yourselves. You're the first to use ad-hominems against the manager published for all to see, yet fail to see the irony in the fact you yourselves haven't done anything worthy of note? You're rather ridiculous in the extreme and thats my final say on the matter.

David O'Keefe said:

Reading comprehension isn't your thing is it Mark? Based on that response.

Bily is a class player and he will come good that appears to be the consensus amongst blues despite his admittedly poor performances at the moment. He doesn't need to change his game he needs an attcking full-back.

Mark, you have unhealthy obsession with birth certificates, but for the record Mark I am 28 and stopped being a teenager 8 years ago. Your a bit of angeist, Mark, aren't you?

Why dont you fellas get a room? you are like an old married couple. I was looking for Everton Banter but found you two...... think I'll give it a miss
