Landon Donovan: shows quality even when everyone else goes scruffy

The Sunderland game allowed the blues to get up and come back fighting after a disappointing 45 minute showing in the FA Cup. What we got was a reverse with the second half seeing Everton lower their workrate too much, giving away possession cheaply. The blues need to remember and act on the fact - great teams put 90 minute performances in, regardless of fatigue or confidence and its time the blues showed what they can do consistently.

Despite the scruffy performance in the second half and the last 20 minutes in particular, Landon Donovan showed his quality throughout and going one better than the Manchester City game.

His as described turn of pace really does mean he's an asset as he again (like City) ran onto a second ball, this time from Cahill into the box and slotted confidently low under Gordon to get his first goal from the blues.

The great thing about Donovan is that he's playing out wide where really he should be to get space, as he doesn't physically look strong enough for the middle, but that isn't stopping him from coming inside - as his goal and other goal line clearance shows. He's still learning as Birmingham shows - making the right decision on coming in or going out to make the cross, but thats just a matter of experience.

The only issue with him is that we want him to go past people more in the space he has, show them his turn of pace and whip some crosses in as well. He'd literally be the complete player if he did that for us. He again backed out of one or two challenges, but equally mixed it up at other times against yard-dog Lee Cattermole for example. If he brings that ruggedness to the table as well he'd probably get to play inside. He's just got to keep showing us more.

Tactically a player like Donovan allows the Everton 4-5-1 system (much maligned, but misplaced criticism) , to during an attack to be 4-3-3 or even 4-2-4 with players joining in. His pace and positioning allows this, and it was much needed when he arrived.

Anyone who doubted Donovan, won't do now. He's said all the right things and been genuine in it as well, and has fitted in well with the Everton squad and been a team player. His willingness to run and run and work hard for the team coupled with his natural abilities mean he's only going to be popular for Everton, and its easy to see him scoring more. If only every player could be like that. If Donovan continues to show the determination he has now, he'll go far and there will be a growing clamour to tie the young man down in Liverpool.

Heitinga looks almost "Jagielka-like" at the back. The Dutchman really has stepped up at Everton since his arrival, and brings those accurate 60 yard balls he can play to the table as well. The thing with him is he always plays a ball forward towards someone not hit and hope, plus he will play on the deck as well. Very much looking the part now as an Everton player. Its little wonder goalkeeper Tim Howard commented about Heitinga's composure to BBC Radio Merseyside. Similarly Fellaini was again entirely dominant in the middle, and he's showing why Moyes paid Everton's record fee for him, tall powerful and a good footballer the opposition midfielders just can't handle him as he's winning literally everything in the air (Sunderland had to bring Kenwyne Jones on in an attempt to handle him) Compared to last season he's winning everything on the deck too. Dominated the park yesterday with Sunderland having no idea how to overcome him.

Everton have to show the fans 90 minutes every game. Don't let the energy levels drop, because its about outfighting and suppressing your opponent whilst giving yourself opportunities to counter or build your own play up. Everton mix it up, which is what they should do, but it should always be with purposefulness. Don't think because we're two up or two down we should let it drop. Any time you're out on the pitch in an Everton shirt needs to be the same.

Operation Yankie Doodle Foxtrot- Oscar-Kopite will lift off ... T-minus 9 days and counting. Next stop is Wigan Athletic, and then back to Anfield! And it'll be up to every blue to do their duty in both games.

I am happy for Landon and for Everton. Moyes picked up LD just as he was hitting his peak as a player--mostly mentally. You see no more tentativeness out of Donovan like the old days...He's not afraid to succeed.
