Landon Donovan's already a shrewd signing for Everton FC

LANDON DONOVAN will be another shrewd signing for David Moyes.
In fact, he'd have a little bet that his arrival could signal a change of fortunes all round at Goodison Park.
This is the sort of player who will have a positive influence on the place, he's a leader and a motivator and will be determined to have a real go during his time in England.
He could end up doing the running for Louis Saha, Yakubu and Jo, and that could be priceless in a squad that is bound to be feeling the effects of a dearth in numbers and a European and domestic campaign to cope with.
It's also a good idea to sign an American, as Tim Howard has proven.
They are proper sportsmen, real athletes who encompass the disciplines of preparation, diet and refuelling so central to the modern game.
One thing they have lacked over the years is quality - but this guy has it in abundance.

i dont know how you can call the deal shrewd as the lad is with us for 2 1/2 months if we had bought the lad on a contract you would be able to call that shrewd i would say we are just keeping the lad fit for the world cup i would buy him if he was available as he would probably have the same professional attitude as Tim Cahill something our english players lack on the whole in fact i cant think of any english players that are very professional about the gift they have been given
Well, yes, some Americans are "proper sportsmen, real athletes who encompass the disciplines of preparation, diet and refuelling" .... But we have our fair share of the other kind as well.
Donovan, though, is, I think, as Mr Lawrenson anticipates; and if David Moyes is as shrewd a manager as he has seemed over the past seven years or so, he will use Donovan well and Everton will start its rise back into contention for European competitions.
The deal was shrewd because it gets the club Donovan's services at modest cost during what would otherwise be his off-season in America. To buy him would have cost more than half a million pounds p.a. beyond the transfer fees.
