Everton need to find the key to unluck the defences of stubborn opposition

NORMALLY we bemoan the seemingly endless international breaks that disrupt the start of every season and prevent everyone, players and supporters, from getting into their groove properly.

No rhythm or pattern develops and it's hard to work out how good new signings look or get any indication of how the season is going to pan out when the games come along in awkward clumps.

However, in this instance, with Everton suffering so many injuries, the two-week hiatus looks like it might have been a Godsend.

After all, the whole side looked tired in their last outing, the disappointing 1-1 draw with Stoke City that came on the heels of that dramatic fight-back in a rain-soaked Minsk.

You expect Everton to really pressure a side like Tony Pulis's as the game draws on, but in truth, after Leon Osman's tremendous equaliser, the visitors looked just as likely to go on and take all three points.

When that type of team comes to Goodison, with a load of massive defenders and a hardworking midfield, you need something a bit different to unlock them, because as Osman said after the Stoke match, they come to Everton looking to steal a point nowadays.

Mikel Arteta used to absolutely torture the lesser teams, pulling players out of position and creating space for his team-mates, and we certainly look easier to play against without the Spaniard.

Thankfully the fortnight off has given Steven Pienaar more time to recover from his knee injury though, and he could prove pivotal in trying to unlock a Wolverhampton Wanderers side whose ambitions will be exactly the same as Stoke's.

Evertonians want to see more of Diniyar Bilyaletdinov too - rather than being shielded from the rough and tumble of the Premier League he should be encouraged to go and express himself against the likes of newly promoted Wolves.

He's a £10 million Russian international after all, so surely the prospect of facing Richard Steadman holds no fear for him.

David Moyes clearly has faith in Bilyaletdinov - well he better had, considering he paid good money for him - but the ex-Lokomtiv Moscow is yet to really impose himself on a game.

Hopefully he will start to show a bit more belief though, because what he has demonstrated in flashes, particularly when he struck the BATE woodwork, is that he's got a great left foot.

Hopefully we are all talking about it after Saturday's match.
