New signings provide Blues fans with much needed boost!

So after another frustrating summer dominated by the Joleon Lescott saga, which has seen more players leave than arrive, Everton fans finally got their wish in the last week of the transfer window with the arrival of three new players.

In have come Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, Jonny Heitinga and Sylvain Distin and although they are the not marquee signings many would have hoped for, they are signings which will improve the squad and give it much needed balance in what promises to be an exciting season both domestically and in Europe.

After losing Lescott it was imperative that David Moyes signed new defenders. With Phil Jagielka out injured and the departures of Lars Jacobsen and Nuno Valente, Everton's defence was threadbare to say the least, with Phil Neville having to operate as an emergency center half, so the arrival of both Heitinga and Distin look to be yet more shrewd signings made by Moyes.

With both players being hugely experienced at playing at the highest level, and both having the ability to play in a number of different positions, they will give the Everton manager more options and it looks as though the money received from Lescott's transfer has been spent wisely and it can even be argued Everton have in fact improved despite his departure.

Although the signings of Heitinga and Distin do not represent much of gamble, the signing of "Billy", as he is now known, could potentially be a huge gamble but nevertheless one which is worth taking.

He may have cost the club nine million pound but when you think of the money which has been spent on players this summer, this is not a lot in comparison, especially for a full international and for a player who was captain of his club Lokomotiv Moscow.

Add to that his ability to play right across the midfield and chip in with important goals, his arrival will put pressure on the current players and give them that much needed kick up the backside which Moyes has been talking about, and hopefully take some of the creative burden off the likes of Steven Pienaar and Mikel Arteta.

And if he can make the same impact as his fellow Russian Andrei Kanchelskis, who dazzled the Gwladys Street many years ago, Everton will have a real player on their hands and he will sure to be a fans favourite in no time at all.

So it may have taken the sale of Lescott to spark the transfer activity, but on paper at least, the signings which Moyes has made have added to the quality of the squad if not the depth.

But with the likes of Yakubu, Arteta and Jagielka still to return, Everton look in a good position to enjoy another successful season, despite their slow start, and with reports Bill Kenwright and Moyes were trying to conclude more deals in the final minutes of the window, let's hope January proves to be an interesting month!
