Kepp your sugar daddy

Two glorious wins and it feels like spring again. It's not just the scores, but the way they were achieved. Rodwell is blossoming, Pienaar crackling, and my admiration for Saha is fast becoming adoration. But what's that over there? That gloom? Ah yes, it is the doomsayers.

A couple of articles have been out saying that David Moyes has done all he can now at Everton and will move on to a club with a billionaire; that there is only so far a club can go without the resources of an oil baron.

Now it is true that there is a discrepancy between what Robert Elstone said about the transfer budget and David Moyes' perception of the same. And yes, it would be good if the board would put its hand in its pocket and stump up some cash without having to go through the embarrassment of the Lescott fiasco.

But why is there this idea that a sugar daddy will make us champions? It just may be that some of Everton's team spirit is down to the fact that they do not have limitless funds, that there is a sense of solidarity that comes from being the underdog.

Everton had millions in the 1970's and it did them no good. We were in the 'Big Five' in those days (remember that?) - of Everton, Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal and Manchester United. And who won 3 championships in the 1970's? Derby County and Nottingham Forest, both managed by Brian Clough. Neither club had super-rich backers. They just had good management and a good team.

Because that is what wins games - not budgets, not marquee players, but teams. Yes you want good players in your team. But you don't need primadonnas. And we don't need sugar daddies. After all, what is a sugar daddy? He is a rich man who amuses himself with his mistress until she bores him.

So we would be at the mercy of the super rich. He (or she) would be our saviour. And then, when they were bored or wanted to cash out, we would be in trouble. Big trouble. It's not as if rich people have been at the forefront of selfless behaviour in the last year or two. And to be frank, a woman who has a sugar daddy is.... fragile.

So let us not be a footballing Blanche Dubois, bemoaning our former greatness and relying on the kindness of strangers with big bank balances.

Let us have some pride, and win not because we bought the best players, but because we created the best team. Hopefully, that is what Davis Moyes is already doing, and he intends to stay.

Some excellent and well made points.

I don't take anything with this "Moyes has done all he can" nonsense.

Its stirrers stirring.

Moyes has had much interest in being taken away from Everton. From bankrolled clubs.

But the question people don't ask, why would Moyes go after spending 8 years bringing players like Rodwell and Gosling through?
Or recruiting players like Billy or Pienaar or Arteta or Jags.
Why would he let another manager have the benefit of his work? Equally who are actually bigger than Everton? Really? History or size of the support?

Saying Moyes can do no more is like saying Lewis Hamilton or Tiger Woods or Lance Armstrong have done all they can. There is always more to do!
Alex Ferguson and Moyes have both learnt from Bobby Robson's example.

Moyes has sneakily strengthened on last year. Mark my words, unlike our neighbours we will only get stronger this season.

Its started already...
