Everton - Battlers with Bite

To start this I have to explain a story. I live in Sydney, Australia. I have no real connection to Everton or the city they are based in.

My Dad's a Leeds supporter and my Mum grew up in Manchester, yet I'm an Evertonian at heart, I get asked all the time why I support Everton so I suppose I'd like to explain it.

Before anyone tells me I'm not a real Everton fan I'd like to remind you all that the Premier League is a global game, over in England you get to watch the games in the middle of the day, around 3pm and such.

I get up every Saturday or Sunday between 12am and 4am when there's a game to watch. If its not on the tv then I listen to the commentary on
ETV, and also we Evertonians do not choose we are chosen.

It started in the 2006-07 season for me when I watched a derby match (on the tv) between Everton and Liverpool. At the time I didn't even know it was a derby match. I didn't know anything about it but Everton won 3-0. We showed amazing spirit and Andy Johnson truly came into Evertonian hearts when he scored a brace. From that moment onwards I was hooked, I strived to learn everything I could about the club, even doing a school project on it.

Everton needs a larger global fan base. The game is global and therefore so do we, we need an identity out there, my proposition is the underdogs, the 'Battlers with Bite'. The way to compete with the top four is to have a similar revenue, obviously without the champions league money therefore we need to be reaching the people in other countries. Pre-season games in America are not enough. We need more people buying the shirts so we need to get a message of who we are out there.

This is the kind of thing Moyes needs to push, 'we are the underdogs', we're that team finishing just below the top four, we're the team who are doing it the right way, any true footballing fan wants the top four to be broken but they want it to be broken through hard work and amazing team spirit. They don't want Manchester City or Tottenham to break it with their money. He needs to push us being the underdogs, or as we would say in Australia battlers with bite. That slip of his tongue as he was announced as the new Everton Manager when he called us the 'People's Club of Merseyside' was perfect. Just like Ferguson when he said he wanted to "knock Liverpool off their f***ing perch" he's giving us something to rally behind.

That is the identity we need to push, we can get our name out there as the team who are trying to fix the Premier League the right way. Our team spirit is shown in almost every game. Dan Gosling against Liverpool not giving up and scoring that amazing derby winner in the 118th minute, or Phil Neville's tackle on Ronaldo last year at Goodison, it turned the game and our season. We're just waiting for another one this season.

Mikel Arteta

With Arteta, Yak, Anichebe and Jags coming back we'll have a team that's truly good enough to break the top four, assuming they come back as good as they were that is. Even with Lescott gone Distin is as good as him, and we've got some top quality centre backs coming through the ranks. With great youngsters like Rodwell, Gosling, James Wallace and Jose Baxter on their way, players coming back from injury and a few players coming in I believe on our day we can beat just about anybody, and that's what Moyes needs to push.

Evertonian Brothers and Sisters! Hear the Gospel of the Moyesiah and believe. We will break the top four.

Hey Tom, always good to hear from a fellow Evertonian. Don't feel the need to try and justify why you're a blue. Who cares where you live, you're part of the Everton family!! I live in Poland now having been born and raised an Everton fan in the UK. No doubt some people would not classify me as a true fan as I can no longer go to games every week but it takes more than just going to games to be a true fan. But hey, I'm now doing what you do, sreading the Everton gospel in foreign lands!!! Nice article and keep up the "good" work. In Moyes we trust, hey. COYB.
