Moyes-Doctrine: Moyes' having to show his pokerface - needs to take the initiative back

By Mark Reid on Aug 5, 09 09:00 PM in Fans

Fabian Delph, a player Everton inquired after this summer but were "resisted" by a disgruntled Ken Bates (Leeds United dictator), signed on the dotted line for our rivals Aston Villa today. Claiming that Martin O'Neil, was the reason he signed, neglecting that Everton have twice beat out the Villians to 6th spot in previous years and putting them out of the cup: Evertonians had to look on whilst the anti-Everton media machine (facilitated by Manchester City, and Kopites) continues to try and unsettle Everton players at every opportunity, whilst the English Football Association does nothing.
Amongst this was the Kyle Naughton and Sheffield United, Spurs and Naughton's agents triad, who to use an analogy: like a hoodie gang mugged Everton whilst Moyes was at the cash point.

Evertonians were left with that summer sinking feeling, but in "silly season" there is nothing new there.

Amongst this Moyes has had to remained disciplined and focused on Everton's objectives this summer - to strengthen and maintain a cohesive unit, to bring back our injured troops and ensure that the young players brought in via the EFC Scouting Network Database were able to settle.

Everton have brought in Mustafi, Garbutt, Arnoux, Peterlin and have trialed a numer of individuals looking at taking advantage of the FIFA Training Compensation Scheme system, in which we take them in young and Moyes with his staff - build them up, so that our playing staff increases in value due to their age/progression rather than depreciates. With limited resources of Everton (We have money, just not a blank cheque book - but a sensible business model for a club that actually has a future), this is critical, but also the sign of a quality manager confident in his abilities.

These clubs who are using an open chequebook policy are using:
- External Investment
(that at one point will have to be paid back - "pound of flesh", Manchester City's investor's reliability is yet to be tested, along with the issue of foreign owners eventually taking the Premier League's teams abroad in "Franchises", the death of football in England)
- Property Portfolio's
(London clubs particuarly have taken advantage of the property bubble - thanks to the corrupt banks - increasing values have made them richer than other areas of the country, whilst Liverpool's issues are well known, and after 40 years of decline the magnificant city has finally stablised and has actually attracted external investment)
- Stadium Developments
(Numerous clubs have been able to cost effectively grow stadium sizes, and generate additional revenues easier than Everton, although at great cost to club tradition and history).
- Player Sales
(Reguarly generate additional revenues by selling players for profit to keep balance sheets intact)
- Further Debt
(Betting with and risking the future of the club and giving away future potential profit).

At Everton the ideal solution would, and has been used by Moyes - something of everything so that we don't become unbalanced as a club.

This silly season, the positive outcome of the last season is again being challenged. The supporters should be more patient. The club more decisive.

Unfortunately, the business negotiation models: The Funnel Method or The The Bread Crumb Method, has not got certain results required, or for other reasons Everton could not get in the initial position to get the right result and so resources were rediverted away from these players.
Kyle Naughton - was purely a case of dirty tricks employed by two club and agents. That can never be accounted for unless money is no object - which in the real world it is.
Fabian Delph - Leeds would never do business with Everton for marginal reverse of the above (Ken Bates stated as much).

However, over Joleon Lescott (made worse by the City-biased media - particuarly Sky Sports News - salivating over any speculation), some poor individual performances in preseason games - such as the defeat at Blackpool, has returned the feeling of dread from last summer. Moyes has inspite of difficulties has maintained his poker face.

Moyes looks to bring in Philippe Senderos (aged 24) and Rasmus Elm (aged 21), both close to signing... Moyes is yet to play his ace cards, and surprise everyone, because both of these reported possible fees do not cover the overall summer budget. So the question has to be asked, where is the rest going to be spent? Certainly Moyes isn't telling especially after what has happened with other clubs coming in whenever Moyes is linked. But any gambler will take a punt that Everton will spend again once these two are in - but no one will know until the deals are done. So don't discount Mr's Defour or Moutinho just yet.

It is confirmed that Everton have looked at and inquired for multiple players, of various fees. One thing is likely is - another fee will be paid even if Senderos and Elm arrive at Everton, as well as more youngsters. Moyes on behalf of the club will be looking to take back the initiative this summer. The key issue is timing. Too soon, and you pay too much, too late and you pay to much. But Moyes is certainly nobody's fool.

Everton lost the initiative this summer thanks to summer shady dealing by some hypocritical clubs, along with a constant and insesent media campaign constructed by Manchester City to apply building pressure to Everton FC.

Moyes will and has to take the initiative back.

Many supporters will be unaware of the promise Moyes made two years ago to "expand the Everton scouting network". Many supporters will probably be too glum this summer to know about The EFC Scouting Network Database - something Moyes introduced. A database used by the scouting network to keep records based on a highly modified/expanded video game version used as the foundation of the PC game - Football Manager (Sports Interactive/Sega) principally focused on names and records of key players and development players in squads world wide, EFC have exclusive access rights to the full database. Other clubs such as Chelsea pay agencies for access to 3rd party databases, but Everton under Moyes developed their own used only by Everton.

For this reason, taking players from the MLS/and US PDL in Arnoux and Peterlin, coupled with the expanded scout network, it can be sure that Moyes is far more informed on players world wide than any Everton FC manager before, and probably any in the Premier League, Manchester United and "Old-Pink Nose" Alex Ferguson included.

Improvements to this will be the need for Blackberry(R) and Wifi uploads to The EFC Scouting Network Database along with having a dedicated information and security manager to ensure that Moyes and Round have access to a constantly and streamlined information system. That continues to be an envy of the Premier League.

Signing players is more an art than a Science - like our infrastructure at the School of Science and Finch Farm.

Moyes needs the support. Everton need to retake the initiative. When the signings arrive it needs to be publicised widely - Everton are a buying club. A club with room to grow.

Then the real work will begin under David Moyes for the fight this coming season to regain our former position in the League, that 25 years ago this year was all ours.

What a poorly written, ill considered piece of drivel - typical of one of my fellow supporters who thinks that blaming others is the way to show their support.

just accept - money talks and we are not in the league to compete.

Get over yourself.

Brilliant article... thank you...

Bob,

If you believe that Everton is no longer "in the league to compete" why are you still following Everton?

And every single point, from Kyle Naughton, to The Funnel Method, to Moyes and his scout network is based on fact.

I've not blamed anyone. On the contrary, I'm backing Moyes to retake the initiative.

I don't need to get over myself. Ill considered? Poorly written?

I don't think so and nor do other syndicated readers.

Sorry, I didn't understand what that was on about at all. Youn can't be suggesting that Everton can win the league this year, but are you suggesting we might win it in 10?

Mark Reid said:

Buying young allows the club to build and develop and increase our resources - even before any Stadium issue is settled.

It also allows us to develop as a club.

So in answer to your question. Yes.

Anything is possible within the next 10 years.

I find your observations interesting... football is a team game...

you can certainly buy your way to titles, that has been proven...

you can also buy and buy and not win anything, that has also been proven...

going back to the team theme,,, if you create a great scouting network, as Mark is saying, then it's possible that we may in time create a team that wins all...

like Cloughie did with Nottingham Forest...

Time will tell, I thank you again for an insightful article...

I've been an Evertonian for 40 years, and I'm proud of the way we are going about business...

it can be frustrating at times, but building a team, nurturing players along, step by step.... instead of throwing money at things,,, hoping things will turn out....

more real...

Cheers

Good article Mark, I think all the years’ pessimism and relegation fights have made a certain part of our support think anything other than emanating what other teams do or indeed winning the league a failure. In Moyes we TRUST (total revolution undermining silly twits) that last words is interchangeable depending on your mood!!!
