Marouane Fellaini booking was not unexpected, says Everton's Phil Jagielka

PHIL JAGIELKA revealed that Everton were ready for the booking of Marouane Fellaini - but they are also ready to go into Merseyside derby battle without him.

The Belgian's 10th booking of the season means he misses both the league game with Liverpool at Anfield next Monday and the FA Cup fourth-round tie at the same venue on the following Sunday.

Referee Martin Atkinson explained to the Everton players during their 2-0 win over Hull City on Saturday that Fellaini was booked for persistent fouling.

But it was the high foot on Sam Ricketts two minutes into the second half that was deemed to be dangerous play and sealed the midfielder's fate.

"Being realistic, the way Felli plays, he is hardly likely to go four or five games without a booking, so there was always a risk," said Jagielka, who marshalled the defence to a sixth successive clean sheet.

"He does seem to be a target for referees, and his size probably doesn't help.

"He's so big that when he lifts his boot, like he did for the booking today, it's only waist-high to him but it's chin-high to his opponent.

"His hairstyle makes him even bigger, and any time an arm or leg goes out to try and win the ball, there is always the danger he is going to catch someone.

"He is not going to shrink, and I can't see him getting his hair cut, so we are going to have to live with it.

"But he's still not getting many breaks from refs, and there was a case for saying it wasn't even a foul today - but he's still only as young lad, learning how things work over here.

"He might have to adapt his approach a bit, but you can't take away the physical side of his game. That's important for him and for us.

"We bought him for the overall package, and that includes putting his foot in and putting himself about."

Jagielka added: "Our attitude is that someone will come in and we will go to Anfield determined to do a job. That is how we are."

The centre-back also defended the decision to keep Fellaini on the field for the second half, as Mikel Arteta's stunning free-kick on the stroke of half-time appeared to make the three points safe against an impotent Hull outfit.

"Was it a risk keeping him on that long? Don't forget, it was massively important we won," said Jagielka.

"It was a case of getting the job done, then worrying about anything else afterwards.

"Maybe another 10 or 15 minutes into the second half and he might have come off, but it was just unfortunate."

Fellaini did sign off before his suspension with a goal, heading in at the near post form Leighton Baines's cross in the 18th minute.

"It was high time he came up with a goal,"Jagielka joked.

"I think he's been closing his eyes for a few headers recently and hoping for the best!
