Spurs 0, Everton 1: Moyes relishing prospect of the next 300 games

DAVID MOYES expressed his pride after reaching 300 games as Everton manager - then declared the good times are still to come at Goodison.

Moyes marked the occasion by guiding his team to a 1-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur yesterday.

Steven Pienaar's 51st-minute strike was enough to ensure Everton bounced back from defeat at Wigan last Monday by regaining seventh place with their fifth away win of the season.

By taking charge of his 300th game, Moyes became the fourth manager in Everton history to reach such a landmark after Harry Catterick, Howard Kendall and Cliff Britton.

Manchester United's Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger of Arsenal are the only current Premier League managers to have enjoyed longer continued service at their respective clubs.

And Moyes said: "I'm really fortunate to have been given 300 games and a lot of managers don't get that opportunity these days. I hope to be looking forward to another 300 games and I really believe the good times are still to come at Everton.

"I'm not going to overtake Fergie if he's going on managing until his 70s!

"But it's big honour and maybe in its own way it is a form of success to be managing the same team in the Premier League for that length of time."

Moyes added: "When I took over the job a lot of people didn't think I would turn it around. But, like the players in the game today, it was a case of showing it can be done.

"Hopefully there's now a more stable Everton up near the top of the table."

Everton's win means they have moved seven points clear of the drop zone and within four points of the Champions League qualification places.

But with the Premier League still so closely packed together outside the top three, Moyes is concentrating on racking up the points than assessing his team's position on a weekly basis.

"For me, the points are what matter at the moment, not the position you are in," said the Goodison manager. "The league is so tight at the moment that you can be eighth one day and then 14th the next. Points in the end will make prizes and you need to keep getting the points.

"You might feel comfortable in seventh but it's the points that make you feel more comfortable.

"Everybody from sixth to seventh down will be looking over their shoulders and there'll only be the top five that have points that are making them free of concerning themselves about what is going on at the bottom. I think the players we have are good enough to make the top six."

Moyes also revealed the nature of the mix-up that saw goalscorer Pienaar emerge for the second half wearing a Leon Osman shirt before being sent back to the dressing room by eagle-eyed referee Steve Bennett to change.

"I think he got changed next to Ossie at half-time, and in the first half their shirts would have got damp and wet so he's clearly just pulled on the wrong one," he said.

"Maybe Ossie will claim the goal!"
