David Moyes: Yakubu injury a "massive blow" for Everton

DAVID MOYES admits the "massive blow" of losing Yakubu for the remainder of the season took the shine off victory at Tottenham Hotspur.
Steven Pienaar's 51st-minute strike earned Moyes's side a deserved 1-0 triumph at White Hart Lane yesterday. But the win was overshadowed with the news Yakubu's campaign is over after the striker ruptured the Achilles tendon in his right ankle.
The Nigeria international suffered the injury in an early collision with Didier Zokora before hobbling off in the 11th minute.
Everton's injury gloom deepened even further when substitute Louis Saha, who replaced Yakubu, later left the field on a stretcher after suffering a fresh hamstring problem that will be assessed this morning.
And with James Vaughan poised to undergo knee surgery in the United States that will keep him out for up to three months, Victor Anichebe is now the only senior striker available to Moyes at present.
The Everton manager is now almost certain to make a move when the transfer window reopens next month to bolster his attacking resources.
And of the loss of last season's leading goalscorer Yakubu, Moyes said: "It's a big, big blow for us. His goals have been really important whatever club he plays for.
"Yakubu has ruptured his Achilles and it will keep him out for the rest of season.
"It is a massive blow for us and the boy as well. Look at his record in the Premier League since he has been here, it's normally 15 or 16 goals per season.
"For us to find that and replace that it's not easy."
Moyes added: "Saha looks like he has a hamstring injury, but we haven't properly assessed it yet.
"On the back of James Vaughan having a knee operation this week, it's really given us a blow.
"Tim Cahill can play up front but we have to find other ways of doing it.
"We'll have a look at what is available on loan.
"The club gives us all the money they can but as everyone knows we don't have big amounts of cash."
Despite the injury setbacks, Everton recorded their fifth away win of the season to move back into seventh place in the Premier League table.
Pienaar's winner was only his third goal for the club and arrived via a wicked deflection off Tottenham right-back Vedran Corluka.
Everton had produced a dismal performance when losing 1-0 in their previous game at Wigan Athletic last Monday.
Moyes said: "It was a great response after what happened at Wigan.
"They players knew they had to respond, and that's something they have always done for me.
"We didn't do what we should have done last Monday but we put that right.
"I thought we played very well, which is something you have to do against Tottenham at the moment.
"Tottenham are riding high in good form and you could see the pressure they put us under.
"I thought we played some good football and I'm really pleased. It was terrific.
"Maybe it was a bit of good fortune that got us the goal but it was a great result against an in-form team."
With Phil Jagielka again in impressive form, Everton held firm in the face of a strong Tottenham charge in the closing moments.
The former Sheffield United man made his England debut against Trinidad & Tobago in June but has since been overlooked by Fabio Capello.
Moyes added: "Jagielka was outstanding. He's been reliable and consistent which are two big words for a manager to give a player.
"He didn't let anyone down. The form he has been in is exceptional.
"Pienaar played really well, Arteta played very well in the middle of the park and Fellaini had an influence on the game.
"But it would be hard to single out too many individual players as it was a really good team performance."
