ACADEMY FOOTBALL: Manner of conceding disappoints Dewsnip
EVERTON under-18s ended their frustrating run of 1-1 draws in the wrong way as they went down 2-0 to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby at Kirkby Academy on Saturday.
Neil Dewsnip's side had draw six of the last seven matches 1-1 prior to Saturday, but Saturday's means they have not won in eight matches since a 4-0 victory over Barnsley on September 13.
Academy coach Dewsnip said: "The performance was very, very disappointing and I don't know why. We just didn't get going at all and it is inexplicable really. We have played well all season.
"The game was quite poor generally I thought and we gifted Liverpool both goals really. So it went from a poor game going nowhere from out point of view to a game at 2-0 going nowhere quickly. It never really got any better."
He added: "From our side the result and the performance were very poor."
Everton will aim to end a frustrating few months and take out their derby frustration against Bolton Wanderers at Finch Farm this Saturday (kick-off 11am).
Dewsnip said: "It is a case of picking ourselves back up and trying to bounce back. The lads have shown lots of character all year and that is why Saturday was a bit confusing.
"But a derby game is a derby game and even at the highest level that can happen.
"Maybe it is as simple as that and we can get back to it this week."
Meanwhile Childwall-born midfielder Hope Akpan is the latest Academy player to have signed professional forms with 17-year-old following in the footsteps of James McCarten, Nathan Craig and Lewis Codling.
EVERTON UNDER-18s: Stubhaug; Barnett, McArdle, Sinnott, McCarten; Nsiala; McCready, Akpan, Redmond, Krenn; McAleny (Sheppard 45), Codling (Powell 80). Subs: Fitzgibbon.
