Late equaliser costs youngsters

A LATE Stoke City equaliser cost Everton under-18s all three points as they drew 1-1 for the second week running in the Potteries on Saturday.

Neil Dewsnip's side looked to be back to winning ways thanks to Jake Bidwell's goal early in the second half, but Stoke hit back with two minute left.

Everton dominated much of the first half, but a spirited display by the home side made it hard for them to break through.

But Bidwell got the goal Everton deserved 10 minutes after the break when he headed home Tom McCready's corner.

Everton had chances to increase their lead but Conor McAleny and Lewis Codling fired off target form good positions.

Dewsnip's side also could have had a penalty when Codling appeared to be fouled, but the referee waved away their appeals.

They were made to pay for not increasing the lead as Stoke scored following a corner.

Dewsnip said: "It was a very difficult game. They played in a direct fashion. It was very stop-start and made it difficult for us to get any pattern or rhythm together. The pitch was very slow and it all added up.

"We created quite a few chances in both halves, but didn't take them. But once we scored a smashing goal from a corner, it looked like that would be it. It seemed one of those sort of game where one goal would be enough. But we all know every team is likely to get a chance and they did. It came from a corner with two minutes to go and that is very disappointing because it is the second week on the bounce we conceded from a corner. We will work on that to try and cut it out."

Everton will be keen to claim all three points this time when they take on West Bromwich Albion at Finch Farm this Saturday (kick-off 11am).

Everton have no fresh injury worries for Saturday's match.

EVERTON U18s: Roberts; Nsiala, McCarten, Barnett, Bidwell; McCready, Akpan, Barclay, Forshaw (Craig 65); Codling (Powell 80), Sheppard (McAleny 70). Subs: Davies, McArdle.
