David Moyes: My future is with Everton

DAVID MOYES insisted he sees his long-term future at Everton - despite last night's UEFA Cup exit adding to his early season problems.

The delay over signing his new contract has created an air of uncertainty at the club and Moyes admitted the situation may be affecting his players.

But after last night's 2-1 defeat in Liege, he said: "No one has a divine right to win football games. You have to earn the right to do so.

"Managers can get into situations where it can be hard, and I have had it before. That's your job.

"There's no manager in football who thinks they have an easy ride, that's for sure. That's part of it. But I want to stay."

Moyes was non-committal, however, when pressed on when he will sign his new deal, saying: "There might be a timescale, something might happen."

Then when asked to assure supporters he would stay at Everton, Moyes replied: "The supporters have known that for a long time."

Moyes felt Liege captain Steven Defour should not have been on the pitch prior to his contribution for the opener after vehemently confronting referee Peter Sippel.

Defour was furious at a decision that had gone against his side, and just stopped himself short of shoving Sippel.

Instead, the German only issued a yellow, and then shortly after failed to spot a foul on Ayegbeni Yakubu that could also have warranted a caution.

"You can't run up to a referee and do that in his face nowadays. We all know that," said Moyes.

"In England you're not allowed to do what he did. Maybe in Europe it's different, but I thought they were stricter.

"I thought he should have been sent off for his reaction, and then for him not to be sent off for the professional foul on Yakubu was unbelievable.

"If he (Defour) had been sent off it would have made a difference because he had the shot that led to their first goal.

"We were playing well against 11, so against 10 we would have had more space."

Blues goalscorer Phil Jagielka turned his focus to improving the team's domestic form - starting with a win over Newcastle on Sunday.

"We'll have to pick up our league form and hopefully have a decent run in the FA Cup instead," said Jagielka, who scored his team's away goal.

The Blues defender suggested Everton's failure to win the home leg against Standard, who pushed Liverpool all the way in qualifying for the Champions League, was a major factor in the tie.

"I think we let ourselves down in the first leg, maybe gave ourselves too much to do tonight," added Jagielka.

"We played well but their tactics worked. They played on the counter and obviously won the game."

However, he was not prepared to be drawn on whether the penalty which put Standard 2-1 up on the night should have been awarded.

"I'm not too sure," said the former Sheffield United player. "We're just disappointed he got through too easily."

But he added: "We're disappointed, but we've got to kick on now for Sunday."

And referring to Moyes' own contract negotiations, he concluded: "The gaffer will sort his own contract out in his own time.

"But I'm sure he's going to stay."

Am i the only Evertonian who thinks Moyes isn't the person to take us to that next level we so desperately desire or am i speaking out of turn? Lets have a look at the evidence, the derby playing 4-5-1 at home, Saha standing on the side lines for a good few minutes and still being there when the ball went out for a throw in and then the rs subsequently score their 2nd goal.A couple of seasons ago 1-0 up at home against Man City 3 minutes of injury time have elapsed which was the time indicated by the 4th official and on comes Davie Weir what happens next, another 30 seconds are added and Micah Richards scores. And then of course there was last night on comes Peanuts with 15 minutes to go and was by far our best player so why didn't he start and why did it take Moyes so long to take the totally inept Neville off and just as a side thought why does Arteta seemed to go missing when we need him most i.e big games? And while i am at it of the teams that were on C5 last night i am racking my brains to think if either of the pundits in the studio actually played for any of them the ever so youthful Aidy Boothroyd was o.k but then you had the completely biased Collymore what a complete t$t this man is,it was quite clear on the replays that it was never a penalty but Collymore "oh yeah definite penalty" you complete pr&*k.

I think you're speaking out of turn Dave.

People don't realise the work involved in taking us to "the next level", and the element of luck you need.

Drops in form are inevitable unless you have pots of cash. Then you can spend your way through drops in form, or have players in depth to minimise this.

David didn't have this till late this summer, and the players that did come in are non-english speakers in the majority whom will need more time to adapt than typical.

One thing I am sure is, Moyes is a top top class manager. He as a person is trying to improve the style of play, which is dependent on the quality of players, which under Moyes HAS IMPROVED.

We all saw a better attempt at Possession football, to previous games. Lessons are being learnt. We need balance of playing long when appropriate to do so, to make chances, but it's important to keep the ball since the opposition can't score if they don't have the ball. We also saw us defend further up the pitch. Press the defenders. This shoud continue too.

They key thing for us to all remember is the large number of personel changes relative to last year.

That's unsettled things and it's going to take awhile to sort it out. It'll happen, it's starting to happen now.

We should see how the players adapt to Newcastle Sunday. A good mix of possession football, balls into the box, and taking our chances is what Evertonians ask for.

And keep the Newcastle team under wraps... Don't let them play their game.
