Academy football: Everton must learn to kill games off - Dewsnip

FOR the third successive Saturday Everton under- 18s drew 1-1, this time against West Bromwich Albion at Finch Farm.

Neil Dewsnip's side have not won in their last five Premier Academy League matches, drawing 1-1 on four occasions. Despite again taking the lead they has to settle for a point.

It was a fairly even first half but Everton led just before the break as Lewis Codling fired home after being set- up by 14-year-old England youth international Ross Barkley.

Codling could easily have had a hat-trick but couldn't convert his chances. He saw one effort tipped over the bar and could only divert the ball back to the West Brom keeper after Lee McArdle's shot rebounded back to him. Then Codling was also brought down in the area, only for the referee to wave away his penalty appeals.

Everton were made to pay for their missed chances. Lee McArdle cleared off the line, but the visitors grabbed an equaliser through a header following a cross from the right.

Late on Codling fired over and Everton has to settle for a point.

Dewsnip said: "It was just the same as last week really. There was nothing in it in the first half. The game didn't get going but we were ahead without being great. We went in 1-0 up after a really good goal. Ross Barkley won the ball in midfield and ran through to slip Lewis Codling in, and despite being under high pressure from two centre-halves he finished well.

"We had a few chances to go 2-0 up, all of them falling to Lewis Codling. He had a penalty claim, a really strong one we thought. Lewis was brought down in the box, but the referee turned it down, which was disappointing.

"They had two chances and scored. In terms of possession the result was about right, but we had more chances and should really have scored more than the one goal."

He added: "We must learn to kill games off. There is not too much wrong at the other end of at the moment we just need to score more goals."

Everton will be keen to end a run of frustrating draws, but will have to wait as there are no fixtures in the Academy League this weekend. When they return on Saturday, November 1 they will travel to face Crewe Alexandra (kick-off 11am).

Dewsnip said: "You don't know where you are when you are drawing all the time. We need to do better all over, but not scoring goals is the main area we need to look at."

EVERTON UNDER-18s: @Stubhaug; McArdle, Duffy, Craig, Sinnott; Redmond, Akpan, Barkley, McCready; Codling, Powell (McAleny 60). Subs: Shepphard, Davies, Nsiala.
