Phil Jagielka admits to Everton feeling nervous at home

PHIL JAGIELKA admits Everton's poor home form has made them "apprehensive" of playing at Goodison.

The 2-0 defeat in Saturday's 208th Merseyside derby means David Moyes's side have lost their opening three home games of the campaign.

It is in stark contrast to their away form, with Everton still unbeaten on their travels with two wins and one draw.

Moyes's men only lost four Premier League games at Goodison last season - all against the four teams that finished above them in the table - and took until December 29 to concede as many home league goals as they already have this campaign.

And Jagielka said: "There are no excuses. You could argue the grass was too green and the ball was too round, but the fact is we were beaten by a better team. That's been the case in a couple of games this season.

"We're conceding too many goals at home. That's the one thing that sticks out. Last season we didn't concede anywhere near as many at the start.

"We're giving ourselves a bit of an uphill task, but hopefully it's just getting our blip out of the way ridiculously early in the season.

"We're a little bit apprehensive when playing at home because we haven't won at Goodison this season. If you don't win at home, then you start to get nervous."

Jagielka added: "People's expectations are greater because of how we've progressed in recent seasons, but I wouldn't say we've made a rod for our own backs.

"We expect to perform better than we have, we have good players in the squad and we shouldn't have had such a poor start.

"We haven't got 25 players fighting for a place like Liverpool, but there's enough strength in depth as we showed last season, and hopefully we can finish somewhere similar."

Having been eliminated from the Carling Cup last week by Blackburn Rovers, Everton must now pick themselves up for a crucial UEFA Cup return at Standard Liege on Thursday.

Moyes's men require either victory or an unlikely high-scoring draw of 3-3 or more to progress.

But Jagielka said: "I don't think the derby defeat puts any more pressure on Thursday's game. It'll be a different competition, and after the 2-2 draw it was always going to be a difficult game.

"We didn't do ourselves too many favours in that game, we've known what we've had to do since then and losing the derby doesn't change that.

"I don't know about the rest of the lads, but I'm not feeling any more pressure because of our poor start.

"But we're a little bit apprehensive when playing at home because we haven't won at Goodison this season. If you don't win at home, then you start to get nervous."

Jagielka was one of the few Everton players to emerge with any credit from a game in which they were second best overall.

Nevertheless, Fernando Torres still managed to net a decisive brace for Liverpool, and Jagielka said: "If you look in the paper it doesn't look as though I've done too well, with Torres scoring twice!

"When you're in the Championship or in the reserves, you dream about playing against top quality players.

"He had a fantastic season last year, has got going now in this one, and if you can pit your wits against him then it's all part of the learning curve.

"I thought I did okay against him overall, and it gives me confidence that I can get myself back to where I want to be in terms of my performance.

"He's one of the most dangerous opponents I've faced. When people do their dream teams or fantasy league teams, I'm sure he's in most of their teams. He's not in mine though, not sure we're allowed to have Liverpool players!

"With players like Torres, Adebayor and Drogba, you half look forward to playing against them because you want to show you can do well."

Jagielka also had praise for Robbie Keane, who played a part in both of Torres's goals.

"Robbie Keane is a fantastic player," he said. "There's a reason why Liverpool spent £20million on him.

"He always caused teams problems when he played at Spurs, and I'm sure once he settles in to the way Liverpool play, he'll become even more dangerous than he is at the moment."
