Mistakes still keep hitting Everton hard
DIFFERENT opposition, same old script. The defensive frailties which have punctuated our indifferent start to the season were once again evident, particularly for Hull's comedy second.
The bedrock upon which our recent relative successes have been built is now looking to be the area most likely to undo any good work. It's becoming increasingly worrying - not just in terms of the numbers of goals we're shipping, but also in view of the teams we're conceding them to.
We've not played anyone decent yet but we're still conceding freakish goals to ordinary sides on a regular basis.
That said, the chaps have stood up to potentially damaging body blows in each of the last three matches now, and still managed to salvage something from all of them. A small mercy perhaps, but it's good to see that the team still possesses the stomach for a bit of a fight.
Once again, Tim Cahill demonstrated just how vital he is to this Everton side. His presence makes us instantly more potent and despite the fact that everyone knows he's good at booting it between the sticks, not many seem to have to grips with how to stop him doing it.
We've already played some dross this season and we're only mid-table. Some of the big guns will be rolling into town soon, and we're going to need to get ourselves sorted out sharpish for their arrival.
I don't know. It depends on whether your glass generally looks half full or half empty. Personally, I can't help thinking that it's going to be a long, hard season. Unlike my good lady, whose reaction to the result was "Two goals? On a Sunday? That's quite good, isn't it?"
She's smashing at everything else, mind.
