Keeper denies Dewsnip's side

EVERTON under-18s had to settle for a point as their recent scoring form came to an end in a 1-1 draw with a very good Sunderland side at Finch Farm on Saturday.

Neil Dewsnip's side had won three in a row, scoring 14 goals in the process, but a determined Sunderland ended that run.

Everton, though, still created several chances, but on this occasion couldn't take them with the visitors' keeper, particularly after the break, in excellent form to deny them.

The visitors dominated the first half without really threatening the Everton goal too much. One effort was blocked superbly by full-back Jake Bidwell. But after the break, with the introduction of Austrian midfielder George Krenn, Everton took control.

Lewis Codling saw two efforts superbly saved by the Sunderland keeper, and Karl Sheppard was also denied. But Everton eventually broke the deadlock after 60 minutes. Danny Redmond's corner was flicked on by Sheppard and James McCarten tucked it home at the far post.

Sunderland grabbed an equaliser with 15 minutes left with a free-kick from the edge of the area.

Late on Bidwell saw a fierce drive superbly saved by the visitors keeper, while at the other end Sunderland hit the post from another free-kick.

Everton, though, secured a point and coach Dewsnip said: "It was a very good advert for youth football. It was a game of two halves, I suppose. Sunderland did better than us in the first half, and had quite a lot of possession and apart from one chance never really threatened our goal - although the potential was definitely there.

"The first half wasn't the performance we have put in over the past few weeks, but the second was better. We got organised at half-time and did really well in the second half. We had quite a few chances to score, but their goalkeeper was outstanding."

Everton will look to get back to winning ways at Manchester City this Friday (kick-off 11am).

EVERTON U18s: Stubhaug; Nsiala, McCarten, Barnett, Bidwell; O'Kane (Krenn 45), McCready, Akpan, Redmond; Codling, Sheppard (McAleny 70). Subs: Roberts, Craig, Kinsella.
