EFC FAN: So many appear so few in middle
MY NAN never used to tire of telling me how much better things were when she was younger.
"Of course, when I was a girl you could just leave your doors open. You could just close the front door to, no-one had any worries about being burgled, it was just what we did," she would say.
Nan was talking about the 1930s, when all this used to be black and white fields and everyone walked at pace-and-a-half.
Everton adopted the same attitude on Saturday.
Inviting our red cousins into our home, we told them we'd be out for a couple of hours and took it on trust that they would be equally gregarious.
For a good while, they rummaged without touching, until finally the temptation became too great and they just lifted whatever wasn't nailed down.
For the second successive home derby, Everton have managed to go a full ninety minutes without managing a shot on target. That's disgraceful. Torres had more efforts on goal yesterday than Everton have had in the last three derbies.
And how many times are we going to pack a midfield against Liverpool but still surrender all of the middle ground to them?
It seems to defy the laws of physics that so many people can appear so few as soon as Liverpool get possession.
Tim Cahill's laughable sending off rubbed salt into the wounds, but had no bearing on another dismal derby capitulation.
David Moyes' comments that this is what £100m buys you may or may not be correct, but we all know the situation the club is in and there's no point griping about it. We just keep on.
Perhaps a clear statement of commitment off the pitch would engender a little more fight on it. It's just a thought.
