Victor Anichebe adds to David Moyes's injury worries at Everton

VICTOR ANICHEBE has handed David Moyes an injury scare - as Everton ramped up their efforts to bring Tiago to Goodison.

Anichebe is currently on international duty with Nigeria at the Olympics, with his country due to face fellow Africans Ivory Coast in the quarter-finals on Sunday.

The striker came off the bench during the group game against Japan to score the decisive second goal that ultimately earned Nigeria qualification to the last eight.

But Anichebe has revealed to having played through the pain barrier after suffering a knee injury during his country's training camp, news that is likely to alarm Moyes.

"I was sure that I would feature in upcoming crucial games after overcoming the injury worries before our first match," said the striker.

"Then, it was like hell for me because when I tried to sprint, I felt a sharp pain in my kneecap.

"But I have been getting quality treatment to give myself the best chance at the Games. It's a lot better than when I first did it and I can jog now. So hopefully I will not feel it again."

Anichebe is hoping to emulate the Nigeria team of 12 years ago and win the gold medal.

"I have been a great admirer of the likes of Kanu, Daniel Amokachi and Celestine Babayaro after their exploits at the Atlanta 96 Games and I am preparing myself to join their league," said the 20-year-old.

Everton remain confident of bolstering their ranks significantly before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

And they have turned their immediate attentions towards hijacking Newcastle United's move for former Chelsea midfielder Tiago.

The Magpies are keen to land the Portugal international from Juventus on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent £8m move, but prolonged negotiations over wages have given Everton a window of opportunity to attempt to persuade the player to join compatriot Nuno Valente at Goodison Park.

However, hopes of signing Brazilian forward Vagner Love have been dashed after it emerged the club had been misled by an agent over CSKA Moscow's willingness to allow the striker to depart on loan.

The Russians have no intention of sanctioning anything other than a permanent deal, with Everton deciding to concentrate on other targets, with Real Zaragoza's striker Diego Milito still on Moyes's radar.
