Three point banker is now anything but for Everton
EVEN when blinded by the sorry sight of Mitch Ward, Farrelly, Thomsen, Angell et al, my Everton FC souvenir glass has always been half full. The glass is now so evaporated, however, one's throat is like Gandhi's flip-flop.
When the fixtures came out, West Brom away was seen as the perfect opportunity to get our first away win to get us in the top three or four after a relatively easy first six games. O how the times have painfully changed.
Already, games we would 'expect' to win have become games we 'hope' to win.
It says it all that the only bit of pleasure I've had this summer regarding Everton was watching the excellent 'The Golden Vision' making a belated appearance on TV this week. Even in the deepest darkest relegation battles, there's never been a level of despondency among all Blues like at present.
What makes it all so frustrating is that this was the opportunity we had as a team and club to push on. Given the complete fiasco surrounding everything about the club at present, West Brom will be licking their lips at the prospect of getting their first win back in the top flight today.
What was so painful against Blackburn was the lack of team spirit, which is largely what our success under Moyes has been attributed to.
While the lack of signings is exasperating, it was obvious just how much the likes of Arteta and Yakubu are in need of top quality around them. While Leeds and Man City are thankfully the world champions in the ability to implode as a club, Everton just need to act quickly to ensure this summer hasn't been the downwards turning point for the club.
A win today will help lift a slight element of the gloom, but what is more important is what happens off the field with incoming transfers that will shape our season.
A win today and seven signings next week and I'll sup from my souvenir glass once again - if our criminally under-marketed club still stocks them that is!
