REAL MADRID are preparing to rival Everton for the signature of Real Zaragoza's Diego Milito.

The Argentina international striker has been a target of Goodison manager David Moyes throughout summer as he seeks to bolster his strikeforce.

Everton were alerted to his availability following Zaragoza's surprise relegation from La Liga at the end of last season.

However, reports in Spain are suggesting Madrid manager Bernd Schuster is now contemplating a move for the player.

Zaragoza, who turned down an offer from Napoli for Milito earlier this summer, have slapped a £16million price tag on the player, although it is thought Madrid are confident a £12m offer could prove successful.

Everton are still in negotiations to bring Newcastle United's Alan Smith, Rennes midfielder Stephane M'bia and Sporting Lisbon playmaker Joao Moutinho to Goodison. They are also hopeful that former Chelsea midfielder Tiago can be persuaded to return to the Premier League from Italian club Juventus on a season-long loan.

Meanwhile, Tim Cahill has vowed not to rush his comeback from the foot injury that has kept him on the sidelines for five months.

The Australian hasn't appeared for the first team since breaking the fifth metatarsal in his left foot for the third time during a 1-1 draw against West Ham United in March.

Cahill has since undergone surgery in Australia to repair the damage and embarked on an intensive rehabilitation programme, which included working with the squad during the recent tour of the United States.

And Cahill said: "I'm taking it steady and leaving nothing to chance. But I'm getting closer every day. When I get the go ahead, I guarantee I'll be back in great shape and hopefully in a position to make an immediate impact for both Everton and Australia.

"The longer you are out, the more you appreciate what it means to play at the top level and there's no doubt in my mind I'll be back bigger and better than ever. The operation went well but the rehabilitation has taken a little longer than I'd have liked.

"I'd planned to be back for the start of the Premier League season but it wasn't to be. There's no way I'll be rushing back before I'm ready - that would be no good for myself, Everton or Australia."

Yakubu has backed compatriot Victor Anichebe to help win gold for Nigeria at the Olympics.

The young striker has been influential in his country's run to the final in Beijing, in which they will take on Argentina on Saturday.

And Yakubu said: "I am so happy for the boys and I hope they can do the same again and win the gold medal. It's great for Victor - he's young, so it's great experience."
