Off-field inactivity is now making Everton fans fearful

DESPITE Everton gaining their first three points of the new season last weekend, the gloom around Goodison Park has not yet completely disappeared.

From a distance the result against Tony Mowbray's much-fancied promoted side would appear to be a very decent away victory for David Moyes's threadbare side.

However, many of the deficiencies on display in pre-season and the opening day defeat to Blackburn Rovers again reared their head at The Hawthorns.

Worryingly, Moyes's side were outplayed for long spells by Premier League new boys West Bromwich Albion - who gained a reputation for eye-catching football in the Championship last term - and if the home side had possessed a little bit more quality in the final third of the pitch the outcome could easily have been very different.

Certainly many of the club's travelling supporters were less than impressed with the performance on the field.

It is a feeling that is also reflected off it by the activity - or lack of it - notwithstanding the signing this week of free agent Lars Jacobsen.

Providing cover on the right hand side of the team, the unheralded Danish international will hopefully prove a good acquisition.

But his arrival will do little to allay the fears of supporters, who had expected the Goodison outfit to push on from last season's excellent fifth place finish, or satisfy their desire to see a lot more new faces at the club.

To many it seems that Everton lack the required urgency their situation should necessitate, and seem to be quite happy to continue chasing targets they have been tracking all summer.

But with the transfer window closing in six days, time is rapidly running out to capture the signatures of players who, for one reason or another, have so far failed to commit themselves to Goodison Park.

The likes of Sporting Lisbon's Joao Moutinho, Juventus' holding midfielder Tiago and CSKA Moscow striker Vagner Love were among the high-profile targets to escape Moyes's grasp.

So now it's a question of at what point does Moyes, who has admitted he has had to lower his sights considerably in the transfer market, decide to switch his attention to the next bunch of targets on his list?

That assumes, of course, that there are alternatives and that such deals have at least been set up and are ready to go.
Everton fans, who are preparing for a difficult season, will certainly hope so.
