James Vaughan regrets 'mistimed' challenge

JAMES VAUGHAN has expressed his regret after the red card that could rule him out for the beginning of the season.

The Everton striker was sent off in the final minute of the 2-0 defeat to MLS side Chicago Fire in midweek.

Vaughan launched into a poor challenge on Fire's Daniel Woolard and was instantly dismissed by referee Landis Wiley.

Everton are now waiting to discover whether the United States Soccer Federation file a report to the Football Association on the game, which could lead to further disciplinary action that may see Vaughan suspended for the start of the Premier League campaign.

And Vaughan admits he was relieved the Fire player escaped serious injury.

"I ended up mistiming it and going over the ball with two feet," he said. "It was an accident and there was nothing malicious in it. I am just glad I didn't seriously hurt the player."

With temperatures topping 100 degrees in Denver, Everton's players were put through their paces with a training session at the Dick's Sporting Goods Park in preparation for the friendly against MLS side

Colorado Rapids on Sunday evening.

Vaughan paid a visit to renowned specialist Dr Richard Steadman, who is based in the city, for a check on his progress after surgery on his knee earlier this year.

The second-half substitute appearance against Fire was the striker's first outing since February.

And Vaughan added: "It felt good to be back. I've had the injury for a few months so it was good to be back playing alongside the lads.

"I've got a few bumps and bruises but that's a good feeling having played a game.

"I was just looking forward to playing. I was desperate to play. It was longer than I was expecting to get and I felt good fitness-wise."
