EVERTON are close to wrapping up the signing of Ecuador international Segundo Castillo.

Goodison manager David Moyes has targeted the 26-year-old Red Star Belgrade midfielder as he intensifies his recruitment drive in the final days of the transfer window.

The deal, thought to be in the form of an initial one-year loan with a view to a permanent move, is subject to Castillo passing a medical and also depends on a work permit application, which has been lodged with the Home Office.

Castillo, who has 33 caps for Ecuador and scored two goals, has spent the last two years in Serbia with Red Star.

However, it was announced at the end of last season that he was to leave the club and had an unsuccessful trial at Blackburn Rovers earlier this summer.

Now Moyes has moved for Castillo, who was also being tracked by Wigan Athletic.

Everton, though, are facing a fight to sign Shaun Wright-Phillips with Manchester City manager Mark Hughes "very hopeful" of capturing the winger.

Wright-Phillips is expected to leave Chelsea in the next few days after reluctantly accepting he is not part of Luiz Felipe Scolari's long-term plans.

Everton have contacted the Londoners with the offer of a one-year loan deal, while City have made a £9million bid for the England international.

Quotes attributed to someone claiming to be an agent of Wright-Phillips stating the player was against a move back to the North West were yesterday dismissed. And City manager Hughes is confident of persuading the player to resist the lure of Goodison and return to Eastlands.

"We're obviously keen to bring him to the club if we can," he said yesterday. "If the opportunity presents itself we'll try to pursue it but we're not further down the road as yet. But it's a possibility. We're very hopeful."

Wright-Phillips is one of several targets David Moyes is chasing before the transfer window closes on Monday evening. Guinea international right-back Kamil Zayatte of Swiss team Young Boys impressed during a recent two-day trial but the arrival of Lars Jacobsen means the position is no longer a priority.

Moyes remains interested in Rennes midfield Stephane M'bia, but faces a race against time to sign the Cameroon international.

The player has held further talks with Everton during which he reiterated his desire for a move to Goodison, but Rennes are refusing to sell the player for anything but an exorbitant fee.

Meanwhile, Victor Anichebe has expressed his pride after helping Nigeria to a silver medal at the recent Olympics.

Anichebe was part of the squad beaten 1-0 by Argentina in last weekend's final in Beijing.

The striker has now returned to Finch Farm and will be considered by Moyes for Saturday's home game against Portsmouth.

And Anichebe said: "I am so proud to win the medal.

"We were within touching distance of the gold but it's a huge achievement just getting a medal.

"It was an unbelievable achievement and a once in a lifetime opportunity."
