Alan Smith could be a great signing for Everton
AMONG the many players with whom Everton have been linked this summer is a player I know really well and I've no doubt he could make a real contribution - if he signs.
Alan Smith is not the type of player who is going to score 20 goals a season, but what he will do is run through a brick wall every game and that sort of application and commitment would help him flourish at Goodison Park.
When Leeds had reached their pinnacle and were headed over the other side of the hill, he never stopped giving his best, but I think the decision to play him on the right side of midfield or in a holding role at Manchester United and Newcastle United hasn't done him any favours.
He might not have found the net for Newcastle but I'd still back him to chip in with a few crucial goals and, if David Moyes continues to play his favoured five man midfield, Smithy could well thrive in the position behind Ayegbeni Yakubu. A change of scenery maybe is just what he needs.

Sound argument but, sorry, can't agree.
He's turned us down before, at least twice, favouring the bigger buck and he's failed to deliver on either count.
A good lad, in his day, with a strong work ethic but tainted with poor discipline.
Leave him alone, has to be better elsewhere.
Those dirty journo's haven't worked out NewsNow & other sites expose their cheap attempts at media manipulation.
You couldnt be further from the truth, one of our biggest transfer mistakes of recent times and there have been a few. He cant pass, cant score, cant play any position, has poor disiplinary but if you want someone who will run about loose the ball, miss the goal, and get booked or sent off for a stupidly late challenge then your welcome too him. If I were KK I would have driven him down, and held a gun to his temple while he signed a contract with you. I can only hope the yids come in as they do and offer double for him so your side isnt wasted by a talentless has been.
Nigel Martin must have been let out of Hospital.
Newcastle fan got it perfect.
Smith is useless, clueless, reckless, and worthless. if ever a footballer was overpaid, he is one. He is only just behind "Franny" Jeffers.
Smith will go on a free if you ask Keegan on the quiet, but even that`s too expensive.
I`m sure the Zingari league are looking for talent............
Imagine going to the game on saturday with the dogged pair of Jimmy Bullard and Alan Smith in central midfield. Both English and reportedly 4m and 3m respectively. Not many would want to come up against those two and a snip in this inflated market and ENGLISH too. Forget Moutinho at 16m when we can get homegrown hungry players for less than Moutinho's left side!!
Personally, I think these anti-Smith sentiments are on the harsh side.
At Goodison, im May/June he was played out of position by KK, far far far too deep.
I see him as cover for Tim Cahill playing a similar role, in behind the Yak. Alternatively if Cahill is playing he is someone in the box who can hit em, and really hasn't scored as many as his potential would suggest (mainly because SAF and KK both played him deep).
It all depends on the money. £2million bargin. £3.5 million on the higher end but acceptable, >£4 millon too much.
Also it would be necessary for him to take a pay cut but being at a better club with a good role in a strong team that is together, if he scored some goals he'd soon be accepted. His key attribute would be increasing our physical threat, linking play going forward and getting in that box. Which he isn't being allowed to do at Newcastle!
Evertonians usually sit on the fence until players perfom. But when they do, loyalty usually follows. It was the same with the Yak.
Like I say, I'd take Smith at the right price and depending on medical evaluation, and if he was truly up for the challenge at Everton.
Am sure Moyes has considered the same.
