Youngster Iain Turner determined to seize his chance

YOUNG goalkeeper Iain Turner is relishing the chance to stake his claim to be part of Everton manager David Moyes's plans for the new season.

The Scotland under-21 keeper will play in the club's first pre-season friendly this afternoon against FC Sion in Martigny, Switzerland (kick-off 3pm).

Turner, and fellow youngster John Ruddy, are the only two keepers attending Moyes's training camp.

First-choice Tim Howard is excused early training due to his World Cup commitments in the summer with the United States, while last season's second choice, Stefan Wessels, has been released.

Moyes is tracking Sporting Lisbon's Serbian keeper Vladimir Stojkovic as a possible deputy for Howard, so Turner and Ruddy are aware they must make the most of their chance to impress Moyes.

For Turner in particular, merely getting a game is reason for encouragement after the youngster missed most of last season with a serious hip injury.

Turner has subsequently worked hard during the summer to regain the fitness to give him the opportunity to stake his claim.

Turner said: "Last season was a write-off for me.

"I have been in a lot of the summer trying to get my fitness back so at the moment I am feeling good.

"My fitness is getting there but it has been a hard couple of weeks."

That extended spell on the sidelines has made the goalkeeper all the more determined to make headway at Everton.

He added: "All long-term injuries are hellish, I just want to be playing week-in, week-out. I just want to get fit and get back in the team.

"I am dying for a game. During the whole of last season I played about three-and-a-half games, so I just want to get matches under my belt.

"I just want get back in the team, prove myself and show everyone what I can do.

"Everyone wants to be number one for their club, number one for their country.

"That is every goalkeeper's dream."

Moyes is expected to call upon almost all of the players that travelled to the week-long training camp in Switzerland.

However, James Vaughan and Leighton Baines, who have only recently recovered from long-term knee and ankle injuries, are unlikely to receive any playing time.

It will give a chance to the clutch of youngsters in the party, including Lee Molyneux, who missed the whole of least season with a serious injury.

The young left-sided reserve player said: "Training with the first-team players after the year I've had is something very positive for me."

Of his injury, Molyneux added: "I had slipped two discs in my back and they were lying on a nerve and needed to be shaved. It was very painful."

Everton will return to Merseyside immediately after this afternoon's game, which is being shown live on evertonTV.
