Darren Fletcher move fades as Everton eye Vladimir Stojkovic
DARREN FLETCHER has dismissed reports of a move to Everton, insisting he is full focused on becoming a first-team regular at Manchester United.
The 24-year-old midfielder has been a bit-part player since progressing through the ranks at Old Trafford, and Everton David Moyes is reportedly trying to persuade him to follow former United team-mates Phil Neville and Tim Howard down the M62 to Goodison Park.
Moyes's top priority all summer has been finding a replacement for Birmingham-bound Lee Carsley in midfield but Scotland international Fletcher has now dismissed talk of a transfer as speculation.
He said: "You just learn to deal with that as your time progresses here.
"The most important thing is you're focused on Manchester United. Unless someone tells you otherwise, that's what you do."
Fletcher made 24 appearances for United last season but is looking to play more of a part this term.
"To play in more matches than last season, that's obviously the target each season," he said.
"You do your bit, you're patient and you've got to wait for your chance. I'll be ready to take my chance when it comes and I'll hopeful play a few more matches."
Fletcher is also unfazed by the prospect of United's squad growing this summer, saying: "I don't think much needs to change but fresh faces are always good. Competition for places is always going to be at Manchester United.
"It's something you've got to rise to."
Moyes, whose side play their first friendly of the pre-season in Switzerland against FC Sion in Martigny, is also determined to bring in experienced cover for first-choice goalkeeper Tim Howard following the summer departure of Stefan Wessels.
Sporting Lisbon's Serbia international Vladimir Stojkovic has become a significant target, with the player's agent claiming the keeper will being a trial at Finch Farm next week.
"I can confirm that Everton have made a bid for Stojkovic," said his agent Zoran Stojadinovic.
"The offer is a season-long loan, with an option to purchase the player
definitively at the end of this period. The transfer fee is likely to be between 2.5 and 3million euros.
"At this moment we're just waiting for the visa to be able to travel. Things should be sorted out shortly. 'Stoi' is really excited about the possibility of going to England.
"It was the Everton manager himself, David Moyes, who spoke to me. What Stojkovic wants is to play, and if he goes to Everton he will fight hard with Howard to earn a starting place.
"Provided that the manager is sufficiently impressed with Stojkovic, he will likely look to keep the player."
Stojkovic's position is complicated slightly by the player poised to be called up by Serbia for international duty at the forthcoming Olympics, which would rule him out of the first two games of the season.
However, Everton are no longer considering a move for Switzerland international right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner.
The 24-year-old, who appeared for his country in this summer's Euro 2008, currently plays for Lille in France after starting his senior career at Grasshoppers Zurich.
Moyes is keen to bring in extra cover at right-back, particularly as Tony Hibbert, the squad's only specialist senior play in the position, is likely to miss the season after a knee operation.
Although Lichtsteiner would not make a huge dent in Moyes's transfer budget and could have been bought for as little as £500,000, Everton's interest in the player has now cooled.
Meanwhile, six Everton games have been rescheduled after the first raft of televised games was announced yesterday.
The first will be the trip to newly-promoted Stoke City, which has been moved back to Sunday, September 14 with a 1.30pm kick-off.
The Goodison derby at home to Liverpool will once again be broadcast live by Sky, the game being shown at 12.45pm on Saturday, September 27.
