Joleon Lescott deserves his awards - now the fans deserve fifth

CONGRATULATIONS to Joleon Lescott for picking up two player-of-the- season awards this week.

There were probably more candidates than usual but it would be hard to make a case for anyone being more impressive over the whole the campaign than the ex-Wolves defender.

Whether at left- back or centre-half he's been tremendous since arriving at the club and this season has seen him grow in stature - whenever we play the very top sides, the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United, he often looks like the only one of our players who wouldn't look out of place in their line-up.

He certainly never looks overawed by anyone; only when appearing for England has he ever looked a bit out of sorts, and in some ways those indifferent performances at the tail end of the Steve McLaren reign might have worked in Everton's favour. In the past, whenever one of our players has starred wearing the three lions it has usually marked the beginning of the end of their Goodison career.

Lescott's goalscoring feats in his second season on Merseyside have been a crucial factor in pushing the Blues up the table and we could certainly do with him adding to his tally in Sunday's encounter with Newcastle United. After all, the forwards certainly seem to have forgotten where the net is, with even Phil Neville slotting more recently than any of our strikers.

Ayegbeni Yakubu could do with proving that he doesn't in fact clock off at Easter every year while poor old Andy Johnson would probably enjoy his summer break more if he could sign off with a goal.

There has been paper talk of the hardworking frontman leaving in the summer, with Kevin Keegan allegedly one of his admirers.

However, with David Moyes looking to add to the size of his squad, as shown by his willingness to offer Lee Carsley and Nuno Valente new deals, it would come as a huge shock if he was to offload a player who never gives less than everything and was, lest we forget, an absolute crowd idol for much of last season.

We would love to see the team sign off with a swaggering performance then, and everyone would be delighted to see Johnson in particular get on the scoresheet. However, at the end of the day the target is qualification for the UEFA Cup, and beggars can't be choosers, so we will all gladly settle for a dreadful goalless draw.
