Finishing fifth would be something to be proud of

THE dramatic resolution of the 2007/08 season is upon us, and while Everton can only finish in one of two places, to my mind finishing fifth is significantly better than the place immediately below.

That's not just because the fifth spot carries with it the reward of UEFA Cup football.
Finishing fifth means you have effectively won the league beneath the so-called Big Four.

Kevin Keegan's comments in the week may well have angered his club's owners and maybe even some Newcastle fans, but what he says is fundamentally the truth as it stands.

Everton might have broken into that top four a few years ago and are the closest to doing so again, but at present they are still a few players and still a few wins short of repeating that achievement.

That is reflected in the fact that Everton haven't beaten any of the sides in the top four this season, while equally Liverpool haven't managed to beat any of the teams in the top three. There's a real pecking order at the moment in the Premier League, so to finish fifth would be the icing on the cake for a squad which has, at times, been stretched to the limit.

In order to do that Everton must take at least a point tomorrow against Newcastle, and once again the Goodison crowd can play a large part - as they did against Aston Villa.

Despite their recent run of results, Newcastle are not a team to be feared, and the Everton fans can roar them on to the result we need.
