Expect much more from Mikel Arteta next season
STEVEN PIENAAR may have been Everton's creator-in-chief this season but no surprises for guessing who followed him home.
Mikel Arteta may have struggled for long periods to show his brilliant best yet that did not stop him being directly responsible for 10 of the goals Everton scored. Not bad, considering he has been injured since Christmas.
It has been well documented that he has been troubled with abdominal pains and hopefully the operation he underwent in Barcelona last Monday evening will rectify the problem; if Everton are going to make progress next year, a fit Arteta is absolutely imperative.
Some will wonder on the back of speculation linking him with a return to Spain if we have seen the last of him in a blue shirt but, before heading off for surgery, he asked what date when the players are due to reconvene for pre-season training and enquired about squad numbers.
The strong, early indications are that Arteta will be here next year to lead Everton's charge and if he can recapture the sparkle that made him Player of the Season in 2006 and 2007, he will - to use a cliche - be like a new signing.
