Europe has given us so many memories

OVERALL VERDICT

A SEASON that at one stage promised so much, eventually petered out with us scrambling for European qualification.
Though Everton are taking small steps of progress they are at least moving slowly in the right direction.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE SEASON

Arteta's Exocet against Fiorentina. The fightback was complete, Goodison was rocking and the Italians were shaking.

LOWLIGHT OF THE SEASON

Losing the penalty shoot-out to the Italians. After playing so well and showing so much character it was a real kick in the teeth. And the hangover very nearly wrecked the rest of the season.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON

Yakubu. The first 20-plus goal striker we have had since Peter Beardsley. A player who can score from nothing and always looks a threat. He scored 21 goals this season, despite not even being at the club for the first four games. And he was a bargain at £11.25million.

GOAL OF THE SEASON

Anichebe's goal away to Kharkiv. Never can a goal have been greeted which so much relief and enthusiasm. He seemed to take an age to pick his spot as he rounded the keeper, barged a defender away and side- footed into the net. Cue bedlam on the terraces. A UEFA banana skin had been avoided and we were in the group stages.

GAME OF THE SEASON

Man City away. A perfect performance that should have produced a greater margin of victory than the 2-0 it did. City were comprehensively brushed aside on their home turf as Everton turned on the style to live up to the moniker of The School of Science.

WHAT NEXT?

More tangible progress by narrowing the 11-point gap on fourth place, going one stage further than a cup semi-final and more positive results in Europe. Moyes needs to be backed big-time by the board. He has proved to be trustworthy in spending the club's money, so let the man do his job and put Everton back at the top of the game.
